Members of Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Present to The Okeechobee County School Board
April 12, 2022

On April 12, 2022, SWAT Club members Lizbeth Soriano and Melany Anton were invited to present to Okeechobee County School Board members on topics related to tobacco prevention in schools.

While they gave an overview of the types of activities and projects SWAT club members have participated in during the school year, the presentation focused on tobacco education as an alternative to suspension for tobacco infractions. Currently in Okeechobee County, the only discipline available to students found to be in possession of nicotine products on school property is suspension. Since suspension and expulsion do not address the issue of addiction, SWAT club members asked school board members to consider instituting the free Tobacco Prevention Program sponsored by the Florida Department of Health.

SWAT aims to empower, educate and equip Florida youth to revolt against Big Tobacco. SWAT is a movement of empowered youth working together to de-glamorize tobacco use. Their efforts aim to shape tobacco-free norms, make tobacco less desirable, less acceptable, and less accessible!
